Backyard Compost

Reno County Extension Master Gardener Educational Moment Save the date and attend a Backyard Composting   Lunch and Learn ,   April 29th at Reno County Extension Office, 2 W 10th Ave ,  South Hutchinson , KS 67505. The Class is free! Ample parking in the back. Call the Reno County Extension office @662-2371 to register by April 28th. The Lunch and Learn is 12:15-1pm. Then from 2-3pm it's open for others including 4Hers and parents to come. Some schools are out that day and there are many home-schoolers who may be able to attend. Topics include Backyard Composting, Bin Construction and Worm Composting with discussion on how to create nutrient rich soil from your kitchen scraps and yard waste.

Frizzle Sizzle is a Corkscrew Plant

George & Rita Arnold from Arnold's Greenhouse in LeRoy KS were the guest speakers for a Reno County  Master Gardener's hosted public presentation in mid February at Emanuel Lutheran Church.  Rita introduced the audience to a succulent type plant called Frizzle Sizzle . It is an unusual plant that requires very little moisture and is easy care.This picture is a bit fuzzy, my apologies, but still shows the curly tips of the plant fairly clearly. It starts as a bulb and has thick stocks that curl at the ends. It grows about 8 inches and would be a good container plant. As with succulents, let it dry out before watering and it needs good drainage, The dryness encourages the stock to curl tighter, a desirable quality. It is drought tolerant but certainly not winter hardy. You may plant it outdoors this spring after frost danger has ended, it will be fine in partial shade. But come Fall, if you wish to keep it, you will need to treat it as a houseplant. Put it in a c
