How to Hypertufa & What Is It?

Most recent Hypertufa beginners class is ready to move on to learn more advanced techniques Hypertufa is formed using Portland Cement and is used for decorative garden pots. Fall classes have been held for Reno County Master Gardeners to learn and master the techniques for making, designing and curing the garden planters.  Advanced Hypertufa class show design ideas Once the pots are designed, they will remain outdoors thru out the winter to leach out the lime before planting. Final projects show how many creative design techniques are possible. Once cured, the pots are great for planing herbs, coleus and succulents These succulents are quite content in this low maintenance Hypertufa pot. The next class will be advanced, a beginners class is required first, and will be held November 6th, 8th and 13th at 1pm. This week's rain has been beneficial to our declining gardens. The cooler temps help motivate us to get out and do some cleanup, deadheading and revitalization of our garden beds. Now is the time to divide iris. Cut the leaves in a "fan" shape. Then use a sharp shooter or spade or a dividing fork. You'll need some cardboard boxes to put the iris in as you dig.  If you wish to mark the color or variety (ie rebloomer) have a Sharpie type marker and write right on the Iris fan.  Share with friends or neighbors or plant in another area. Remember to not plant an Iris bulb too deeply. The top of the bulb should be visible. A big Thank You to  all the homeowners who participated in this year's Reno County Master Gardener's Garden Tour. We could not have done it with out you!! The Garden Tour is a long time community event and speaks to the high standard of living we have in our area. We appreciate all who work long and hard to share the beauty of their yards with local residents who came to look, admire and enjoy. It was a beautiful day to stroll lovely gardens with an added opportunity to visit & catch up with neighbors and friends.
